Shared laundry facilities lacked a reliable way for students to know whether a washing machine was available, running or had completed its cycle. This often resulted in unnecessary trips to the laundry area, waiting time, confusion and inefficient use of available machines.

The challenge was to develop a system that improved visibility and coordination without adding complexity to an already familiar activity. The solution also needed to be affordable, easy to install, reliable and adaptable to existing washing machines.
